A Midwifery Resource for Expectant Parents |

The term "midwife" means "With Woman". Midwifery, or the care of a woman during pregnancy and
childbirth, is a tradition of women caring for women that has persisted since earliest times.
In the ancient world, childbirth was considered "a female mystery" of which women alone had special
knowledge and understanding. It was "presided over" by female deities Isis,
Juno Lucina, and Diana, all symbols of feminine power (Donnison, pg 1). Midwives appear in the bible,
in Genesis as well as Exodus. Two midwives in exodus were rewarded by god for not obeying pharoahs decree
to kill all of the newborn Hebrew boys.
