My name is Carrie Dickson, and I am a Graduate Nurse-Midwife living in Southeast Michigan.  I completed my Masters of Science degree at the University of Michigan in April of 2003, and will take the certification exam in June 2003.  I am currently seeking employment as a Certified Nurse-Midwife in a group that is compatible with my midwifery philosophy: offering information and supporting choices for women.  The ideal position will allow me to utilize my Spanish language abilities to improve health outcomes for Hispanic women and babies.  My long-term goals include active involvement and expertise in the both the caring art and business of nurse-midwifery, while working to support and improve the profession.

I have worked in hospital obstetrics since 1993, at a variety of different facilities.  In addition I have experience at two different free-standing birthing centers, as well as minimal home birth experience.  I am fluent in Spanish, and experienced in working with families of many different cultures and backgrounds.

This site was created as a class project for a great distance learning course called Women, Medicine and Society (131:135) at the University of Iowa. I decided on this particular project because as a Labor and Delivery nurse, I thoroughly enjoy to care for the patients of midwives. I see the wonderful care that the women receive, and also find midwives very enjoyable to work with. I have noticed though, that very few women take advantage of midwifery care, and some wonderful, extremely capable midwives are struggling. I can only surmise that this is because there is a lack of information in the community about midwives. I believe that most women, when given all of the information and the option, would choose midwifery care for low-risk pregnancies.

In researching this project I have learned a lot about midwifery, my community, and the Internet. I hope this site will serve to educate others, and that my efforts will continue to be of service to our community long after the completion of the class.
